A great new toy~Sesame Street K'NEX

Thanks to K'NEX and Team Mom my daughter has a wonderful new toy to play with. We received one of the new Sesame Street Building Sets. As soon as my daughter saw it she ripped it out of the package and started playing with it. We received Oscar the Grouch. She then decided it could not wait, she had to take it over and show her friend so she could play with it as well .

Build Sesame Street's resident grouch, Oscar! This creative building set includes fun stickers and an educational "Play & Learn" activity sheet for parent & child to do together - build & learn about vehicles with Oscar! When playtime is over, store the parts in the canister for a quick and easy clean up. Includes 14 pieces, including KID K'NEX rods, connectors and blocks plus unique parts like specially-designed character hands, eyes and even Oscar's pet worm Slimey!

These new Sesame Street Building sets range in price from $10.99 to $31.99. The recommended age is 2 to 5 years old. My daughter is 5 so I was worried it may be a bit to young for her but I was wrong she loves it. I even catch her nine year old brother playing with Oscar at times as well. I am even thinking of buying my daughter the Abby Cadabby for Christmas.

I have a feeling that Oscar will be hot this holiday season so don't delay getting yours. He is already Out of stock at the K'NEX direct site but the Sesame Street Building Sets are available at Target, Walmart, and Toys R Us. You can also get them online at Amazon.com.

Frugal Friday~Hot Water Heater

You can reduce your water heating costs by simply lowering the thermostat setting on your water heater. For each 10ºF reduction in water temperature, you can save about 4% in energy costs.

Many water heaters are installed with their thermostats preset at 140ºF. Most families really only need them set at 120ºF or even 115ºF. Water heated to 140ºF can pose a safety hazard in the form of scalding, especially where young children live.

If your automatic dishwasher does not have its own built-in water heater, it may require a water temperature within a range of 130ºF to 140ºF for best cleaning.

A lower water temperature also helps your system operate with better efficiency and for a longer lifetime of useful service, because reducing your water temperature to 120ºF slows mineral buildup and corrosion in your water heater and pipes.

Read your water heater owner's manual to learn how to properly operate its thermostat. The thermostat dial for a gas storage water heater is typically near the bottom of the tank on the gas valve. Alternatively, Electric water heaters may have thermostats positioned behind screw-on plates or panels. Always play it safe and shut off the electricity to the water heater before removing or opening the panels. Be aware that electric water heaters often have two thermostats; one each for the upper and lower heating elements.

Before changing the current setting, mark the beginning temperature on the thermostat dial for future reference. After turning it down, check the water temperature with a thermometer at the tap farthest from the water heater. Thermostat dials are often inaccurate. Several adjustments may be necessary before you get the right temperature. When you are satisfied that you have found the best setting, you should mark the adjusted temperature on the dial for future reference.

If activities keep you away from home for 3 days or more, turn the thermostat down to the lowest setting or completely turn off the water heater. To turn off an electric water heater, switch off the circuit breaker to it. For a gas water heater, make sure you know how to safely relight the pilot light before turning it off. If you don't know how, just leave it at the lowest setting to avoid a safety risk. Remember to turn the thermostat up again upon your return!

Meeting a Survivor

My kids love to watch Survivor. One of their favorites is Erik Reichenbach from Survivor Fans vs. Favorites because he is from Michigan. Actually he is from a town not far from here. It is known that he worked at Screams ice cream store in Hell, Michigan. Today we went there to rent a canoe to take a trip upon several local lakes. The kids were so excited that we were going there to take our canoe trip and asked if we would see Eric. I said I was unsure if he still worked there. We did not see him there and the kids were a little bummed.

After we left Hell. We went back home and decided to meet my mom and my niece and nephew at a local farm market that has a straw maze the kids love to play in. While the kids were playing my husband I were sitting near by watching and I saw a guy walk in with a bright orange Hell, Michigan T-shirt. Lo and behold it was Erik Reichenbach. So the kids would get to meet him afterall. When I told my son he was there and he was sure I was just trying to tease him.
The kids were so excited. He was very nice to talk to with them and take a picture . He and my son sat and talked awhile before he left. I know it made his day.

Tea Giveaway.

It has been a chilly evening here in Michigan. By 7 tonight I was ready for a nice hot bath and a cup of hot tea. Fall is definitely in the air and with the cooler weather comes more reasons to have a cup of tea to help warm you up and keep you healthy. One of the teas I reallly enjoy is White tea which has become very popular. Along with all the other health benefits White tea is a natural killer of bacteria and viruses. The antioxidants so abundant in white tea tone the entire immune system, providing protection against a variety of invaders and a wide range of diseases. Its helps guard against the common cold and flu.
I am giving away 2 boxes of White Tea, Snapple Strawberry White Tea and Celestial Seasonings Earl Gray White Tea. All you have to do to enter is leave me a comment telling me what flavor of tea you like to drink. Make sure you leave your e-mail so contact you if you win. This giveaway will end Monday, September 22 and I will draw a winner randomly the next day.

The Farmer's Wife

Recently my mom, my daughter and I went for tea to celebrate a friends birthday at our favorite tea shop. One of the ladies working was tickled at how much my daughter liked tea went and got some hats so we could have a good photo opp. They both but on their hats and we got some great photos. After getting a photo of the two of them my daughter turned to her grandma and said "Grandma you look like the Farmer's wife." She may have been correct. What does the Farmer's wife look like?

Frugal Friday-TVP

In the last year our family has started using TVP (Texturized Vegetable Protein) as a meat substitute. Not only is it healthier for you than meat but it also very economical. TVP can replace ground beef in most recipes. 1 oz of TVP is equivalent to about 3 oz of meat. I substitute 1 cup of TVP for a pound of ground beef. We use TVP in spaghetti sauce, Chili, and Sloppy Joes to name a few. There are many great recipes on the web that you can find. TVP is also great for camping trips since it is lightweight and no refrigeration is needed. A great source about TVP can be found here.

To rehydrate TVP add 7/8 cups of boiling water to 1 cup of TVP and let it sit for about 10 minutes. You can add bullion to give it more flavor if you would like. If the dish I'm making calls for a lot of liquid I reconstitute TVP with less water. It will soak up the other liquid in the dish while it cooks and will give the TVP better flavor. You can purchase TVP for about $2 a pound at most health food stores. We usually get ours at Whole Foods and a pound will last us for several months.

Mom's Plan It

Being new to this having 2 kids in school thing and not always being the most organized mother I figured I better doing something about it. While I was out one day I saw this Mom's Plan-it 2009 Engagement Calendar and thought to myself this is just what I need. So I picked it up. Let me tell you that I absolutely love it. It is a 17th month calender so it starts in Aug. It has plenty of room to write in all the days activities and cute little stickers that you can add to a date if you would like. My favorite feature is on the side their is a place to write your meal plan for the week while looking at your calender. It also has a place to write your grocery list and then tear it out to take to the store. If you are looking for something to help you you organized I definitely recommend it.

Christian Woman

I received my new copy of Christian Woman Magazine in the mail today. It is a wonderful magazine full of very uplifting articles and practical christian advice. Just recently I became cyber friends with a wonderful christian woman named Melissa Lester. I stumbled upon her blog A Little Loveliness on a another blog I like to visit about tea. Well it so happens that Melissa is has a regular article in the magazine called Creative Corner. If you visit her blog you will see just how creative she is. When I pulled my mail out of the mailbox today I was surprised to see Melissa's beautiful face was smiling at me. She was on the cover of Christian Woman Magazine. (The cover I have posted here is not her). She wrote a wonderful feature article this month as well as her regular Creative Corner. You can order Christian Woman Magazine for yourself here. If you are looking for magazine to help you in your Christian walk I highly suggest Christian Woman.

First Day of School

It is hard to believe that September is here and the kids are off to school. My son started 4th grade and my daughter started Kindergarten this year. Wow I actually have a little me time in my day which seems a bit strange. I still have mornings to spend with my daughter but it is hard to believe that she has actually started school. I was proud of myself because I had no tears. She is ready to be at school and it is the Elementary school her brother went to so she knows many of the teachers and the staff.

This all reminds me that time does not stand still and to find joy in every day. At times it seems like just yesterday I was putting my son on the bus for the first day of school. I am praying that both kids will have a great and safe school year.
