Old Orchard Healthy Balance- Reduced Sugar Recipes for the New Year and a Giveaway

The American Heart Association took a stance against sugar this past year when it issued new guidelines for daily intake; just 100 calories from sugar per day for women and 150 calories (equivalent to nine teaspoons) for men (source: American Heart Association).

With New Year resolutions kicking in next month, perhaps more attention should be placed simply on heeding the AHA guidelines in 2010 rather than losing an unrealistic amount of weight.  Don't get me wrong I will be working on losing weight in 2010.

Healthy Balance juice offers one solution for reducing the amount of sugar we Americans drink. The line features 13 flavors that have 75% less sugar, calories and carbs than traditional varieties of 100% juice, and it’s available at nearly every major grocery retailer in the U.S.

We are starting with our celebration on New Year's Eve.  Here is the recipe we are going to make.

Healthy Punch Float

Directions:
1. Put 1 Healthy Balance Juice of your choice into a punch bowl or any large deep bowl will do.
2. Get a Quart of Rainbow Sherbert and drop by the spoon fulls into the Healthy Balance Juice Then slowly add a Diet Clear Soda of your choice (store brands work well). The sherbert will fizz like a float drink.
3. Use a ladle and serve in individual cups.

You may also want to try this recipe.

Non-Alcoholic Champagne

Serves 6
Ingredients:
  • 2 cups Old Orchard Apple Juice, chilled
  • 3 cups Club Soda, chilled
  • 1 1/2 tsp. lemon juice
Directions:
1. Stir all ingredients together in a large pitcher until well mixed.
2. Serve chilled in champagne flutes or wine glasses.

You can find many more great recipes at from Healthy Balance here.

You can go here to get a coupon to save on Healthy Balance Juice for yourself.  Even better Healthy Balance has given me coupons for free bottles of Healthy Balance Juice to my readers.  5 lucky readers will win 3 bottles of free juice.  To enter leave a comment on this blog post telling me how you plan to be healthier in 2010.

A Cup of Christmas Tea Tree

A few years ago I bought this little tree to put my tea ornaments on.  This is not the best of pictures but I love this little tree.  What I love the most is that many of the ornaments were given to me by very special people in my life that know  how much I love to share a cup of tea.  I even have the tiny book on it A Cup of Christmas Tea which I love to read every year. After many years it still brings a tear to my eye.  It is a great reminder to stop and take the time during this busy holiday season to share a cup of tea.  I hope that you find the time to stop and have a cup of Christmas tea with someone special in your life.

Green Works New Laundry Products Review

Thanks to Mom Central I was recently able to try out the new natural laundry products from Green Works.  I tried both the detergent and the stain remover.  For both being natural plant-based products I was very pleased with the results. The stain remover does a fantastic job and got out some very tough stains.  It is also great to know that as a mom I can wash my kids clothes without harsh chemicals and still get good results.

The new detergent is dermatologist tested, safe on colors and made with natural, plant-based cleaning ingredients. And clothes washed in Green Works  natural laundry detergent won't leave a harsh chemical residue and are gentle on  your skin. Yet it still cleans with the power you expect from Clorox.

If you want to try out these products for yourself you can go to Green Works and print off a $3 coupon for your purchase.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Clorox Green Works and received a bottle of Green Works Natural Detergent and Stain Remover to facilitate my review and a $20 thank-you gift certificate

My mom has been arranging floral arrangements for a couple of years now.  On Thursday she invited me to go to her class with her.  This Christmas centerpiece is my first attempt at floral arranging.   I had so much fun and I was pretty proud of my work for my first attempt. My centerpiece adds the perfect touch to our kitchen table.

"SuperMom" - Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta

Ronzoni knows our frustration as Moms and the lengths we will go to feed our kids healthier foods. A new survey they conducted shows that that more than half of Moms of kids aged 3-12 find it challenging to feed healthy foods to their kids. So they created a funny, spoof video featuring the Smart Taste Supermom

I think as Mom's we have all been there trying to get our kids to eat healthy food. At times it can be so frustrating. Trying to follow a healthier diet myself I felt I needed to give white pasta but I could not get my kids to eat the whole wheat pasta so Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta is was the perfect solution. I love it and my kids love it as well. They can't tell the difference. It looks and tastes like regular white pasta, but Ronzoni Smart Taste contains added calcium and fiber, helping my kids get in their daily recommended value of both nutrients.

Other benefits for the whole family include lower calories and fat than traditional white pasta, and no sodium, preservatives or cholesterol. With this Smart Taste pasta I can enjoy eating pasta and not feel guilty about giving it to my family because of the added benefits.

RONZONI SMART TASTE pasta comes in five delicious varieties:

  • Elbows
  • Rotini
  • Spaghetti
  • Thin Spaghetti
  • Penne Rigati
Okay Supermom you can go here and download your coupon to save on Ronzoni Smart Taste pasta for your family.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Ronzoni Pasta and received a sample of Ronzoni Smart Taste Pasta to facilitate my review and a $20 thank-you gift certificate."

Skin MD Natural - Product Review and Giveaway

It is getting to be that time of the year that my skin gets all dry and I get eczema on parts of my body.  It seems the older I get the more sensitive my skin gets.  Moisturizers and lotions become a daily necessity and they don't always get the job done.   Skin MD Natural sent me their Shielding Lotion to try.  I had never heard of their product  but I am enjoying using it and my skin has been much less itchy so far.

According to Skin MD Natural  a shielding lotion is unlike any other conventional, artificial moisturizers because it works with the skin to naturally moisturize and heal. Most
conventional, artificial moisturizers only add moisture to the surface of the skin, but do little to repair the skin’s natural barrier against  moisture robbing irritants. Continued use of artificial moisturizers can cause the skin to actually begin producing less of its own natural oils thinking that the skin has enough moisture.  This can cause skin to form a dependence on the moisturizer for hydration. Skin MD Natural breaks the dry skin cycle by working to help restore skin’s natural protective abilities by
bonding to the outer layer of skin, strengthening skins natural barrier against toxins and irritants that can dry the skin, while locking in the skin’s natural oils. It is made using high quality natural ingredients making it over 90% all natural. All ingredients are considered to be of food grade and are also on the FDA's most safe list. It is free of harmful fragrances, parabens, and colorants making it hypoallergenic.

The lotion goes on well and does not leave your skin feeling greasy.  I have to admit that I am not thrilled with the smell but that isbecause it does not contain fragrances.

Skin MD Natural  has generously offered to send a bottle to one of my readers as well.  One reader will receive a bottle of the Shielding Lotion.  To enter just leave me a comment on why you would like to try this lotion.

Wordle

My son has been having fun playing with Wordle. Here is his latest creation. Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes Wordle is a great site to use for scrapbooking. You can also make a wordle for someone special with words that are special to you or tell about your relationship. You can frame it and it would make a wonderful Christmas present. Go check it out and have fun.

A Christmas Tradition

Today the fun begins.  The count down until Christmas.  A few years ago I picked up this snowman that  counts down the days until Christmas.  I thought it was a real fun idea that the kids would love.  I never imagined the HUGE hit it would be.  When I unpack the Christmas decorations the kids are always looking for it.  My son had fun going through his candy to find lollipops to fill it with.  Both kids got up this morning and it was the first thing they talked about.  As soon as my son got home from school today he went right over and got his lollipop.  I am sure my daughter will do the same when she gets home.  I am convinced  that this is a part of my kids Christmas traditions that they will remember for their entire lives and that is so exciting to me.  Do you have any special traditions that you do to count down the days til Christmas?

You will notice the tree.  We call it our Charlie Brown tree.  The lids love to decorate the way they want and they look forward to it each year.  We put it in the kitchen next to their snowman so they have their own little Christmas spot.

Connect With K'NEX

We recently received this 400 piece tub from K'Nex  Thanks to Team Mom.  I was excited to get it for my kids and knew my 10 year old would enjoy building with it.   Here is is review of the  product.

The K'Nex are very fun when doing rather simple things.  I had fun building many different things. When trying to build more complicated things...well that's a different story.  While trying to build the truck my hands got all red from trying to force the stubborn pieces together and I chipped  my nails. Out of 5 I would rate this product a 2.5

As a parent I was very impressed with K'NEX.  The 400 piece tub is a great value for the money.  It comes with 20 different models to build with a range of difficulties.  Both my 10 year old and 6 year old could find something they could build.  Some of the harder models were difficult for both of them.  They can also design things on there own and have a fun playing with the K'NEX together.   I also loves that it comes with a storage tub to make it very easy to clean up after the kids are done playing.

You can win $1000 worth of K'NEX products with “Make a K’NEXion” Video Contest.
Get creative with K'NEX!
Now you have the chance to win $1,000 worth of K’NEX Building Sets and be featured on the
KNEX.com web site.
How? All you have to do is make a video that showcases your child’s K'NEX building skills and
features your child building with select K’NEX products.* Be creative, use your imagination,
construct your own story – as long as the video features building with K'NEX the possibilities are
endless!
The ten best videos will be featured on KNEX.com and one winning video will receive $1,000 worth
of K’NEX Toys.

You can buy the K'NEX tub at Target. Walmart and Toys "R" Us for about $20.99.  I is also available online at Amazon.

Oxfam- Give a Gift That Keeps Giving.

Several years ago knowing how much I love sheep gave me one for our anniversary. Well it wasn't really for me but he gave it in my name to a farmer in another country who was in need. I thought it was a very cool gift.

If you are searching for a unique gift to give this Holiday season you need to check out Oxfam America Unwrapped. This year, Oxfam America Unwrapped introduces gifts that help those who need it most. From $20 for a pair of school uniforms donated to a poor community to a $50 goat sent to a struggling farmer to help provide fertilizer and food for his family, Oxfam America Unwrapped offers a convenient, easy way to find something for every one on your list while helping those less fortunate and avoiding the excess of the holiday season. When you buy a gift from OxfamGifts.com, your recipient gets a card with the image of your specific gift and the money goes toward providing lasting solutions to poverty, hunger, and injustice in over 100 countries.

The sheep like the one above will allow women to create their own income. What's more, the sheep's wool is used to make local textiles. There are a lot of other things you can give as well like soap or blankets or even books for kids.

If you have that person on your list who has everything why not give them a gift that keeps on giving.

I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Oxfam America Unwrapped and received a credit for a gift on the Oxfam site

Free Aveeno Sample

Thanks to BzzAgent I recently had to chance to try out the new Aveeno Nourish Hair Collection.   I was sent the Nourish + Volumize shampoo and conditioner to try.  I was very impressed with the shampoo and noticed a difference in my hair after the first use.  After several uses my hair felt much softer.  According to Aveeno  the Volumize Shampoo does much more than nourish and cleanse — it creates abundance with a fusion of lightweight conditioners, giving hair lush, rich life. Scientific studies show that just three washes helps repair damage, providing the three key elements that give hair life — strength, softness and shine

You can now get a free  sample of your own to try here. You can pick the treatment that is right for your hair.  I hope you like it as much as I do!

Time for Tea Tuesday- A Fall Tea

This weekend we had another great Tea with the ladies from church. Our wonderful host out did herself again. She does everything all by herself and continues to amaze me. We had a choice of 3 main dishes, scones, salad and 3 dessert choices. On top of that she made everyone a bracelet and beautiful leaf shaped cookies. Oh the talent and love that she shows.

These are the beautiful bracelets she made that she used as napkin rings. I would have never thought of that idea. Did I say there were about 20 women at the Tea? What kindness was shown to us.

My daughter loves her tea parties as much as her mother does and like her mother she loves to take pictures. Here are a few she took while at our tea.

These are butter knives also decorated by our host.

Maybe one day like her mom she will blog as well. She may just have a future in photography.

It has been awhile but I would love for you to link up your recent tea post as well. Add you recent tea post and let's share tea!

Tea In London

I am proud to have guest blogger on my blog today.  Denise from Uniquely Tea.  She has a wonderful blog and a fun business of leading Tea Tours to London.

Do you have a passion for something, or perhaps a passion for several something’s? Hello! My name is Denise LeCroy and I have several passions – tea, travel and London.

Several years ago, I married a man from London and left the United States to live with him in that most glorious of cities. I had visited London before with friends, but living there was a dream of a lifetime. I think I dragged my poor husband to every tearoom, tea shop and tea event in London during those years!

When we returned to the states, I settled into married life on this side of the pond and the days and weeks proceeded smoothly until a routine mammogram showed an abnormality that turned out to be breast cancer. Early detection saves lives. Surgery and radiation followed immediately, all went well, and today I celebrate being four years cancer free.

Throughout those soul-searching months of recovery my illness forced upon me a new perspective on many things…life, relationships, what matters and what doesn’t matter. I was given a second chance and was reminded that it was time to dust off my dreams and goals and aspirations that had been neglected for far too long.

I thought about my passions and how I wanted to further pursue them. I already had been a local tea educator for quite some time and although I was also a seasoned traveler, I studied to become a London Destination Specialist. I realized that London’s rich tea history was being virtually neglected by the travel industry, and so I started Tea in London tours - the perfect combination of my love for tea, travel and London.

English Afternoon Tea at traditional and non-traditional venues is a daily event on our tours, together with a combination of other unique activities that include guided walks through areas in London where the tea trade once ruled England’s commerce; visits to museums and galleries to discover old and new tea treasures; journeys to gardens and ancestral homes of early English tea drinkers; and much more. (I can assure you that if one digs deep enough - and I have - one can find a tea-connection to almost anything in London!)

We use a charming hotel in Bloomsbury as our base. It’s a great, quiet location. All of our transport is on a private, comfortable air-conditioned coach and my favorite London Blue Badge Guide, Sarah, accompanies us every day. She loves tea, and you will love her.

But Tea in London is not strictly for tea lovers as we encounter many of London’s famous places and landmarks. Opportunities for shopping are built-in, as well as a free day to privately experience London.

The next Tea in London tour is scheduled for September 13-18, 2010 and I am happy to announce that it will include an optional full-day Tea Masterclass with tea expert Jane Pettigrew. I invite you to visit our website http://www.TeaInLondon for more information about the Masterclass and about the tour.

I hope 2010 will be the year that you have Tea in London!

Time for Tea Tuesday- Cozy Tea

I was feeling a bit under the weather today so I made myself a a big pot of tea.  The problem is  when I am drinking a pot alone I  need to keep it warm.  This is when tea cozies come in so handy.  The two that are pictured are not mine but ones that my sister has made.  She is starting to make tea cozies to sell them.  As a matter of fact I believe the brown one has already been sold. She is a wonderful knitter and does such a great job.  If you are interested in her work let me know and I can hook get you in touch.  I am trying to get her to start an Etsy shop because she does beautiful work. One of these days I will learn to knit my own tea cozies but until then I will brag on the work my sister does.

Listerine Oral Care Challenge

With Halloween being tomorrow you know that means one thing.  Our children are going to eating lots of candy.  October seems to be a month full of sweet treats. With all the candy and sweets of course we worry about our kids teeth.  As Moms, although we may try our best to teach our kids the proper brush and floss routine, the U.S Department of Health and Human Services states that 50 percent of kids between the ages of 5 and 9 get a cavity or filling.

During the month of October our family has been onthe Listerine and Reach "Oral care Challenge".   Our Family  made sure  to brush, floss and rinse every day, twice a day for two weeks—a key step in building a strong foundation of good oral care habits. What a challenge it was but we are working hard at good oral habits.

To help in our challenge we received Listerine Cool Agent Blue which is a product we love in our home. Agent Cool Blue is a pre-brush tinting rinse. Used before brushing, it tints teeth blue so kids pay attention when cleaning their teeth; giving kids a sense of accomplishment that they are doing a good job and reinforcing the positive behavior.  I have to say when my daughter saw the box she jumped up and down.  It was like we were receiving a box of candy.  Not only did they get the Listerine Cool Agent Blue but also the Smart Rinse as well. Smart Rinse is an anticavity mouthwash for kids ages six and older that helps clean and protect teeth beyond brushing alone.I can't say enough good things about these 2 products and how much our kids love to use them.  They have made a huge difference in how are kids brush their teeth and you will always find them by the sink.

Take the Two Week Challenge!

Here's some fun tips to get children in the habit of brushing, flossing, and rinsing twice a day:
  • Post a calendar in the bathroom where your children brush
  • Have them place stickers on each day that they flossed, brushed, and rinsed (2x/day)
  • Reward them for each sticker they earned at the end of two weeks

My husband and I received  Listerine Total Care.   It is also a great product  with 6 ways to a cleaner healthier mouth.

  • Helps Prevent Cavities
  •  Restores Minerals to Enamel
  •  Strengthens Teeth
  •  Kills Bad Breath Germs
  •  Freshens Breath
  •  Fights Unsightly Plaque Above the Gum Line
You can find coupons for Listerine Kids products here.

Disclosure : I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of Listerine and Reach and received Listerine and Reach products for the Oral Care Challenge and a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate.
